By The Very Rev. Rick Lawson

The Cathedral Lenten course this year is a look at vocation and calling.

Originally the word 'vocation' expressed the birthright of every baptized person—a call to know God and live in the light of that relationship. That word now is used almost exclusively to refer to the ordained ministry. Because of this narrow understanding so many have lost all sense of their life calling—that which God has made them to be and to do.

David Ford wrote: Our vocation is not alien to our creation: it is the fulfillment of what we have been created for.

Ash Wednesday the Cathedral will offer the Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes at 7am, noon, and 7pm.

Each of the following Wednesdays of Lent there will be a Eucharist at 6:00pm followed by a soup and bread supper. We will begin our sessions at 7:00pm and finish at 8:30pm.

  • Week 1 ( Feb 13) Called by God
  • Week 2 (Feb 20) Called from Within
  • Week 3 (Feb 27) Called Out
  • Week 4 (Mar 05) Called Up
  • Week 5 (Mar 12) Called On

Holy Week March 16 - 22

Each session will involve group discussion and discovery together of ways to understand and look at calling and vocation. It is our hope that this Lenten journey will be both a time for deepening our spiritual life as well as our relationship with one another. It is a pilgrimage. To go on pilgrimage requires some preparation and thought. As we reflect on our individual vocation we will discover unique ways that God calls out to each of us. As someone wrote: Our Vocation is as individual as our fingerprints. If this appeals, please come and join us. You are most welcome.
