Diocesan Council Hears Reports on Ministries
At its meeting on April 14,
the Council heard several
excellent presentations
regarding our mutual ministries as
a diocese.
Pam Hutchinson, co-chair of
the Commission on Ministry,
reported on its work, including the
results from the most recent
BACAM. Eight persons were recommended
for ordained ministry,
plus the Rev. Claudia Giacoma,
currently a deacon, now a candidate
for the priesthood and Dan
Herron to be received as a deacon
from the Roman Catholic tradition.
The COM works closely with
the Formation for Ministry program
(under the guidance of the
Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler) to
provide extensive local training and
preparation for those candidates
not going to seminary.
Hutchinson reminded Council
that all persons who wish to pursue
ordained ministry in this diocese
must start with the Day of
Discovery which is offered on an
annual basis. The 2007 date is
August 4.
The Rev. Connie Hill Gordon
discussed her efforts to plant a new
church in South Jordan to specifically
serve the Daybreak development.
Currently in the initial planning
stages, this new parish will begin as
a community rather than as a
building. Gordon has extensive
experience in the "emerging
church" movement and is excited
to begin this ministry. Council
unanimously agreed to provide
funding for this project from funds
already designated for evangelism.
The Rev. Suzanne Duffield and
Ossie Denny, both from St.
Elizabeth's, read text from the
"New Jamestown Covenant" which
expresses mutual respect between
Native and non-Native peoples and
regret for past actions.
An opportunity for members of
the Diocese to sign the covenant
will be made available at October's
Diocesan Convention. Duffield
also discussed the importance of a
continuing and consistent
Episcopal presence in Native
American ministries.
The Council continues to
review diocesan policies which are
being revised and/or developed as
intentional guidelines for our common
life together.
Construction on the Episcopal
Church Center (next to St. Mark's
on Second East and First South) is
on schedule and should be completed
by October.
Copies of the formal minutes
for this meeting will be posted on
www.episcopal-ut.org.
Editor's note: The role of the Diocesan
Council is to "develop, adopt and monitor
the annual budget of the Diocese,
advise the Bishop on financial issues,
oversee Diocesan programs, engage
with the Bishop in strategic planning,
develop and periodically adjust Clergy
compensation guidelines, and perform
such other work as may be committed
to it by the Bishop." (Diocesan Canon
22.1.2)
