Funeral Held at Tooele for Ver Straten
Memorial service for the Rev. Stanley Warren Ver Straten was held at St. Barnabas Church, Tooele, on Feb. 11.
Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish presided at the liturgy.
Ver Straten was born Sept. 29, 1939, in Torrington, Wyo., and died on Feb. 5 in Eagle Mountain.
He grew up on his family's ranch in Yoder, Wyo. He graduated from Yoder High School in 1957. Stan married Judith Glenn Bump on Sept. 9, 1960 in Lander, Wyo.
Ver Straten graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1963. He began working for the Federal Housing Administration until he was called to ordained ministry.
He received his Master of Divinity from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1972 and was ordained priest on June 23, 1972.
Ver Straten served parishes in Wyoming, Oklahoma, Nevada, and Utah until he retired from St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Tooele last January. For much of his ordained ministry, he was involved with Native American congregations. He served as a member of the Diocese of Utah's Standing Committee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents C.A. (Jim) Ver Straten and Mona Ver Straten- Fritts, and his brother, the Rev. Charles Ver Straten. He is survived by his sister Bertha Hooper and husband Sonne of Seabrook, Texas; his brother J.J. Ver Straten and wife Mary of Golden, Colo; his son Scott Ver Straten and wife Debbie of Bagdad, Ariz.; his son Steve Ver Straten and wife Michelle of Gilbert, Ariz.; his daughter Shauna Russell and husband Butch of Conway, AR, six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews
A memorial fund has been established at St. Barnabas.
