Mary Janda Ordained

The Rev. Mary Janda and a parishioner embrace as the St. James' community welcomes the new priest. Dialogue photo.

The Rev. Mary Janda was ordained a priest at St. James in Midvale, after a long road of study and reflection. The Rev. Lee Shaw recalls her early conversations about ordination seven years ago when she started in his EFM class. He says she always had a keen sense of pastoral care as a good listener and pastor.

She grew up surrounded by the love of the Episcopal Church. Her father, the late Rt. Rev. William C. R. Sheridan, was the Bishop of Northern Indiana. In his sermon at Mary Janda's ordination, the Very Rev. Jack Potter joked that Bishop Sheridan once opposed women being ordained as priests. However, he added his Bishop friend later changed his mind and would be very proud of his daughter on her special day. An enthusiastic crowd from the parish she has served for years welcomed the newly ordained.

Father Shaw, who was a presenter for his early student, added that the Rev. Mary Janda is a "thoughtful additio" to the diocese.
