Parish Quilts warm the ECCU

quilts
A sea of color is represented by four of the parish-made quilts being readied for the ECCU Hospitality Rooms. These quilts include the work of parishioners from St. Lukes and Church of the Resurrection.

Diocese of Utah Episcopalians are famous for their needlework and quilting skills. St. Mark's Cathedral, All Saints, St. James and a number of other parishes are graced with wonderful needlepoint art.

Now parishes have turned to quilting skills. Remarkable parishmade quilts are being lovingly placed in the just-opened hospitality rooms in the Episcopal Church Center of Utah. The works of art will offer rich decorative touches and a sense of warmth to each room.

Each quilt has a story of love for the church and carries each artist's unique design. Perhaps one story that will always be remembered through the treasured bed coverings will be the quilt featuring Mary Ann Fish's needlework. The St. Stephen's parishioner spent many of her final days skillfully working her tired fingers to create the delicate scenes in the panels. It would be her last gift to the church she loved. She would never see the finished quilts, but the quilt tops were taken to her in hospice. She was excited to see them.

Quilts are often passed generation to generation through families. No doubt some future guest at the Episcopal Church Center will look at Mary Ann Fish's quilt and see a love for the church—a love that also lives generation to generation.

The Rt. Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish is delighted to receive another quilt. Bishop Irish admires the needlework done by the late Mary Ann Fish of St. Stephen’s. Mary Ann did all the needlework, except for the "Trinity" symbol in the center of one St. Stephen's quilt. Teenager Zachary Johnson created that work. The St. Stephen's quilt tops and quilting were coordinated by Marjorie Ball and Becky Ball. The Rev. Lee Shaw is shown presenting the quilt to Bishop Irish.
