A simple cross in a complex war
As we are about to enter Holy Week, we become even more mindful of
the cross. The Rev. Major Carl Wright, Air Force Chaplain, placed a
simple wooden cross on a Kuwaiti beach and watched this sunrise on
Easter morning last year. He had previously received permission to
plant the cross in the Muslim country. It was a moment of hope and
peace for the soldiers who assembled for an Easter service. The cross
was not one of precious metal, or carved from hardwood. It was just
wood stuck in the beach—yet the empty cross in the middle of
a war told all of the Easter message.
Now, Father Carl has returned
to Hill Air Force Base from the war-torn Middle East and also continues
his association with St. Marks Cathedral, where he frequently worships
and sometimes preaches. Our next Dialogue will carry a number of his
powerful pictures of being a chaplain in a war, quote his war journals,
and profile the long-time Episcopal priest and chaplain.
