Good Chili—Bad Judge

It wasn't just a way to get people to come to an annual meeting—but it sure didn't hurt that not only budgets and convention votes were dished out. St. Stephen's joined with San Esteban to conduct the all-church chili cook-off. Ten finalists warmed up the chili pots. Parishioners could vote by throwing quarters into cups in front of the steaming pots. Stuffing the ballot box with quarters only helped to stuff the treasury—so all were winners.

The people's choice award came from the most quarters among the 10 entries. The church also selected a judge who happens to be the Dialogue editor. This is a good way to get your event in the Dialogue. However, this is a lousy way to get your chili cook-off judged in a fair manner, as one should never have a vegetarian judge a chili cook-off contest. Using a judging technique that yours truly would prefer not to reveal, yours truly came up with the same winner as did the"people." Thus, no one can accuse the judge of being full of beans. The winner for her amazing Chile Verde was Gregoria Meza of San Esteban.
