New Postulants Named
After the three-year moratorium on entering the ordination process was lifted in October 2006, several applicants were waiting in the wings seeking postulancy. In addition, several more applicants were nominated by their congregations after completing the Day of Discovery discernment program in December 2006.
The end result is that eight people were invited to attend the Bishop's Advisory Council on Applicants for Ministry (BACAM) interviews held at St James' the first weekend of March 2007.
All eight nominees were granted postulancy in March by Bishop Irish. They are: Elizabeth Ann Brock (Church of the Holy Spirit), Sue Ann Cotonuts (Church of the Holy Spirit), Susan Fischer (St Stephen's), Jennifer Hammargren (St Mark's Cathedral), Deborah Hughes-Habel (All Saints), Jan Kotuby-Amacher (St John's), Blane van Pletzen-Rands (St Mark's Cathedral), and Steve Sturgeon (St John's).
In addition, Deacon Claudia Giacoma (St Luke's) is a candidate for ordination to the priesthood, and Dan Herron (St Stephen's) is seeking to be received from the Roman Catholic Church as a Vocational Deacon in the Episcopal Church.
Dependent upon consents from the Bishop and Standing Committee, Candidates for the priesthood, Kay Cook (St Jude's) and Mary Janda (St James) will be ordained to the Transitional Diaconate at the Cathedral on June 9, 2007.
The Commission continues to work out of the Handbook for Ministry that was designed during the moratorium, and on ways to enhance lay and ordained ministry in the Diocese of Utah.
The next Day of Discovery discernment program introduction is scheduled to be held on Saturday, Aug. 4. This program is open to all who wish to further discern the ministry to which they are called.
