Diocesan Convention to Honor "Those Who Were Before
Us"
Delegates to Diocesan Convention will gather at the new
Cathedral Church Center in Salt Lake City Oct. 26-27 to honor "Those
who were before us."
Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish notes that theme
has a double meaning. It includes both the Native American peoples, "whose
land this was before the arrival of European settlers.
"And it
includes those generations of Episcopalians who established our church
in Utah over the past 140 years."
The opening Eucharist will
be celebrated in the manner of the Ute peoples. Guest preacher at the
Eucharist will be Bishop Steven Charleston, president and dean of Episcopal
Divinity School and a citizen of the Choctaw Nation.
Following the Eucharist all delegates and guests will
be asked to sign the Jamestown Covenant, renewing the commitment of
the church to fully recognize and welcome Native people into congregational
life and to work toward developing an outreach partnership among indigenous
peoples.
Charles Denny will offer a hoop dance performance that
evening (see story on page DD1).
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, convention
delegates and guests are invited to participate in a procession and
dedication of the new Episcopal Church Center of the Diocese of Utah.
A
full calendar of convention activities appears here.
Those planning
to attend are reminded they must register through their parish office.
