Charles Denny to Offer Hoop Dance at Convention
Diocesan Convention will feature a special offering
by Charles Denny of St. Elizabeth's in Whiterocks.
Denny is the 2007 World Hoop Dancing Champion in the
teen category.
He will be gifting convention delegates with a unique experience
as he dances on Friday evening following the opening Eucharist and
feast.
The Hoop Dance utilizes the sacred symbol of the circle
in the hoop.
The circle is the symbol of the unity of all creation. When the hoop
is
broken, it is understood that unity is broken and the hoop needs to
be
mended.
As Denny dances he will make symbols from all creation
with the hoops. He is prayerful as he prepares to dance and he is led
by the spirit
during the dance.
He has explained that although he has many creations
that he presents,
each dance is different and unique with no set pattern. Charles will
dance to the rhythm and timing of the songs of the Red Spirit Drum
group.
Denny wears regalia that is unique to the Hoop Dance
and his people.
The bead work that is part of his regalia has been made by his
mother, Lelilah Ossie Denny, who serves on Diocesan Council.
"I
think we can best understand this gift being offered to us as an
experience in the language of the church as a liturgy," said
the Rev. Sue
Duffield of St. Elizabeth's.
"The gift of the Hoop Dance
is for us to experience and recognize as
a tradition being relived from many, many generations. Charles was
given the dance from one of his grandfathers, Jerry Saddleback of
Hobbema, Alberta, Canada.
"He dances in hopes that he can help
people feel good, enjoying the
different patterns and creations he makes with hoops," said Duffield.
