Call to Convention

St. Mark's SLC

Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish has the following formal announcement about the diocesan convention, which will be held Oct. 26-27 at the new Cathedral Center in Salt Lake City.

Our Diocesan Convention this year promises to be a very special occasion in many ways. Initially we had planned for a one-day business meeting, but as the year unfolded we have found so many things to celebrate we cannot possibly work within that limited time frame!

The theme of this year's gathering has a double meaning. "Those who were before us" includes both the Native American peoples whose land this was before the arrival of European settlers. And it includes those generations of Episcopalians who established our church in Utah over the past one hundred and forty years.

Bishop Charleston
Bishop Charleston is widely recognized as a leading proponent for justice issues and for spiritual renewal in the church in both the United States and Canada. Charleston will be preaching on Friday evening, Oct 26.

As you will see from the schedule (see below), the Friday portion of our time together is for the most part devoted to worship. We will celebrate the Eucharist in the manner of our own Ute peoples, followed by signing the renewal of the Jamestown Covenant, and a feast. We are blessed to have Bishop Steven Charleston, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School, to be our preacher.

On Saturday we will hold elections and Diocesan business in the morning, and dedicate the new Episcopal Church Center of Utah right after lunch. We are planning for a very festive dedication, with processions, banners, quilts and music.

We hope to have many visitors as well as deputies at this convention, so do encourage others to put it on their calendars and join us if at all possible.

"They were all in one place..."
How often does that happen for us?
