Affirmations - Fall 2007

The Parish Expedition

Saturday, September 22
10-3 p.m.
St. Mark's Cathedral Center
231 East 100 South, SLC

The Parish Expedition likens parish leadership today to that of the Endurance (Antarctic) expedition of 1914-1916 and focuses on the leadership principles exercised by the ship's captain, Sir Ernest Shackleton. Presenters suggest reading in advance Leading at the Edge by Dennis N. T. Perkins, Margaret P. Holtman, et.al. Written primarily for business leaders, the principles and case studies are easily transferable to parish leadership. This presentation was first offered as a full-day workshop to clergy in the Diocese of Wyoming by The Rev'ds Ruth Eller and Michael Mayor who have specially adapted its content and process for the Affirmation series. Especially relevant for parish clergy and lay leaders. Donation requested: $10 to cover lunch and materials. To register, contact Angela Rogers at arogers@episcopal-ut.org or call 801-322-4131 by Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The four Sundays before Christmas mark a distinctly different season in the Christian year. Advent is a focused time of longing, expectation, and preparation for the birth of the Christ child. Mary June Nestler, trained as a professional singer at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute, and Frederick Quinn, who has presented numerous programs on great religious music, discuss the spirituality of the Advent season from Bible readings and music.

Ample opportunity is provided for the singing of hymns, old and new, and for group discussion. No prior musical training required.

Donation requested: $7 which includes refreshments, including specially prepared German holiday pastries.
