Help Given But More Needed for Kenyan Student at BYU
There is some good news for Mary Karanu, a Genetics and Biotechnology major at Brigham Young University from Nairobi, Kenya, whose plight was described in the August edition of Diocesan Dialogue.
She had found herself in a financial crisis. On top of a general tuition increase for 2007-2008, BYU has recently increased its tuition for its non-LDS students. Forced to take a second job, Karanu was unable to concentrate on her studies and lost both her job and her sponsor.
A dedicated Anglican, Karanu was unable to compromise her religious beliefs to receive an LDS tuition, and was forced to take the past semester off.
Her rector, Rev. Kathleen West of St. Mary's, Provo, reports some "thrilling news" - The Rev. Sarah Phelps of St. Francis, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., sent $500 for Karanu's scholarship fund.
And the Southern California parish has pledged another $1,500 for her.
But more is needed to meet the tuition for this year.
For more information on Mary Karanu's Scholarship fund, please email the Rev. Kathleen West at rector@stmarysprovo.org.
