Living Boldly
Connecting with each other, our communities and the world
Week of June 18, 2007
For Refugees
Almighty Father, thank you for making us members of your family--"children of God" and "heirs of heaven." Help us to extend the boundaries of our parish family to those who are without family, home and country. Stir us to make and live out our commitment to welcoming the stranger into our midst. Help us to love those welcomed, to share our lives and to witness to them of your love for all of us in the person of your Son, Jesus Christ, our risen Savior and Lord. In his name we ask this,
AMEN.

The Anglican Communion
July 16-August The Lambeth Conference, a once-a-decade gathering of Anglican Communion bishops, will be held at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Go to the official site at Lambeth 2008 for background material.
What's it all about?
For a succinct statement of the issues within the Anglican communion, go to the Presidential Address of Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, offered at the opening service of the Canadian General Synod, now meeting in Winnipeg.
On the Draft Anglican Covenant
The Executive Council, interim body between General Conventions reports that responses to the questions contained in the Study Guide have run about 4-to-1 against the Covenant proposal as outlined in the Draft Covenant Statement. During the time allowed, responses arrived from 201 laypersons, 100 clergy, 27 parishes and 64 groups.
Some Background
All Provinces of the Anglican Communion have been asked by the Primates to offer comments by the end of the year on the draft of a possible Anglican Covenant, which was prepared by a design group and discussed by the Primates in Tanzania in February 2007. This is the first stage in what will be a fairly lengthy process involving the 2008 Lambeth Conference, the subsequent meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council and, subject to that, the possible subsequent submission to Provinces of a text for approval. For a chronology of the statements and papers surrounding the discussion, go to College for Bishops.
A Critque from Canada
Ed Howlett writes: "... please find one of the most substantial critiques of the proposed Anglican Covenant, as posted by Simon Sarmiento on Thinking Anglicans in conjunction with position papers to be discussed at the General Synod of the Church of England. It was posted under 'Annex 4' on June 20, 2007." To read the document go to Thinking Anglicans and keep scrolling down the page to find the summary and link. Along the way, you will also see other comments and responses to the proposed Anglican Covenant made by the Anglican Church in Canada.
Alan Tull responds with a quote from Alfred North Whitehead's address "Science and the Modern World," from the Lowell Lectures, 1927:
"In formal logic, a contradiction is the signal of a defeat: but in the evolution of real knowledge it marks the first step in progress towards a victory. There is one great reason for the utmost toleration of a variety of opinion. Once and forever, this duty of toleration has be summed up in the words, 'Let both grow together until the harvest.' The failure of Christians to act up to this precept, of the highest authority, is one of the curiosities of religious history."
"Globalization and the Future of the Anglican Communion," an opinion piece by Frederick Quinn recently appeared in Episcopal Life Online.
Another angle on what ails us: "The Liberal Arts and Sexual Morality," by Peter Kreeft first appeared in Crisis Magazine in April 2003. Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., is a professor of philosophy at Boston College and author of 45 books, several on Christian apologetics. To read the article, go to Kreeft.

Discipleship & Evangelism
What Will It Take to Double Our Size?
Musings About Evangelism
Bishop Pierre Whalon asks the question in an engaging essay at Anglicans Online. Good non- threatening way to talk about evangelism as relationship-building. If your hands turn clammy at the word, this article may offer you a dry towel. One in a series.
Not-so-trivial quiz question:
Who said, "The Church is the only cooperative society on earth that exists for the benefit of non-members." ?
