Living Boldly
Connecting with each other, our communities and the world
Week of July 12, 2007
O God, the Holy Spirit,
come to us, and among us;
come as the wind, and cleanse us;
come as the fire, and burn;
come as the dew, and refresh:
convict, convert, and consecrate
many hearts and lives
to our great good
and your greater glory,
and this we ask for Jesus Christ's sake.
-- Eric Milner-White, 1884-1964

Tip for Overseas Travelers: Lay or clergy persons covered under Blue Cross Blue Shield may find out about their medical coverage overseas through the Episcopal Church Medical Trust. At the site go to Blue Card Doctor and Hospital Finder, enter your destination, and find information about doctors, hospitals, recommended preventative measures, and current health threats in the region.
This page also has the number people are to call COLLECT from overseas if they are in medical need. (Most overseas numbers won't dial a U.S. 800 number.) "The agent emphasized that the phone number listed at the site, is the number I will want to have with me at all times, as the number on the back of the insurance card is the 800 number. " (Courtesy of Mary June Nestler)
This information may also be accessed through Empire Blue. Go to Find a Physician, then to Across the World or a similar phrase.

LB Editor's comment: Based on my participation in Eric Law's work, these courses can be eye-openers and potentially life-changing. The work opens one's eyes to difference, and how to cultivate not only an awareness and sensitivity to others, but a profound appreciation for the mystery that is each of us. Like peacemaking, learning to be authentically inclusive is important and timely. A visit to the website is rewarding, whether or not you sign up for the courses. Newsletter posted there and some guidelines for respectful dialogue.
Becoming a Missional Church: A Survival Guide: This downloadable, 33-page resource offers direction for congregations committed but struggling to "be the Church" today. Go to Missional Church to order. Cost: $14.95.
Bill Moyers Says it All: Keynote address by Bill Moyers delivered at the General Synod meeting of the United Church of Christ (UCC) is a stunning call to witness against the principalities and powers undermining our humanity today. Evangelism
From The Renewal of Anglicanism by Alistair McGrath:
There is something intrinsically attractive about the Christian faith and, supremely, about the person of Jesus Christ. It is like a "pearl of great price," -- something that is recognized to be worth seeking and possessing, and whose possession overshadows everything else. The fundamental motivation for evangelism is generosity -- the basic human concern to share the good things of life with those whom we love." p. 53
Not-so-trivial quiz question:
Who said, "The Church is the only cooperative society on earth that exists for the benefit of non-members." ?
Answer: Attributed to William Temple, 98th Archbishop of Canterbury, 1942-1944
Evangelism Resources:
Huge amount of excellent material available. For Evangelism 101, consider a downloadable 5-week, 2- hours per session mini-course entitled, How to Share Your Faith Without Losing Your Friends by Harold Percy. To download the leader's guide, go to the Episcopal Network for Evangelism and scroll down the first page of resources. Percy's helpful book on which the course is based, called Good News People is available through Amazon.
Evangelism in Action: Take a look at what some churches are doing to reach audiences -- could be uncomfortable -- but thought-provoking. Go to Outreach & Evangelism.
Look for the next issue of Living Boldly July 26-27.
