Rejoice, O daughter of Sion, and be filled with joy, O daughter of
Jerusalem, for behold the Lord shall come and in that day there shall
be a great light and the mountains shall bring forth sweetness, and
the hills shall flow with milk and honey, for a great prophet is coming
and He will renovate Jerusalem.

Advent Adult Education Series, Four Sundays, Dec.
2, 9,16 and 13 at 9 a.m.: at St. James', 7496 Union Park Ave., in Midvale.
Presenter and Canon for Ministry Formation, Mary June Nestler, writes
this description of the course, entitled The Birth
of Jesus in Scripture and Art:
The ways artists through the ages
have portrayed the birth stories of Jesus tend to romanticize and combine
the stories that appear in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. The result
is the Christmas card and children's story version of the events. The
gospel writers ertainly had much more in mind! Come delve into the
texts themselves to reveal their richness and discover some surprises
about the stories we think we know so well. (Did you know there's another
Bethlehem, that shepherds were often young girls, or that Jesus was
probably born between 7 and 4 B.C?)
The course will be amply illustrated
with art and references to archeological work that illuminate the texts.
Also, the sessions will introduce participants to basic elements of
detailed, critical study of biblical texts. Welcome all, whether you
can come only one Sunday or four! Free.
