Bishop Hayashi issues statement on World AIDS Day
We enter this the season of Advent, which is the beginning of the Christian year of prayer and the season of hope. It is fitting that we also join in the observance of World AIDS Day through our prayers. It is equally important that we continue our reflections beyond that one day and carry them especially during this time of such great hope. We pray for caregivers to continue to make a difference in their loving care for those who are HIV-AIDS positive. We join with our Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, to ask that our congregations support the National Episcopal AIDS Coalition.
We also wholeheartedly pray that we do all that we can, with the Lord’s help, eliminate the stigma associated with those diagnosed with AIDS. That stigma continues to be a major issue in our country. We also share in our diocesan Peace and Justice Commission commitment, as well as with commitments of a number of parish ministries pledged to welcome and share God’s graces with those who have HIV-AIDS, those who care for our friends in Christ, and those who join in the fight against AIDS.

OPEN BOOK STORE GOES ON THE ROAD
The Open Book Store, Utah's Diocesan bookstore, will be one of several vendors selling holiday merchandise at the 7th Annual St. Paul's Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 20, 9 am - 3 pm, in Salt Lake City -- 261 South 900 East. Open Book Store selections of books and gifts will also be available to purchase Sunday morning 11 am - 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
If your congregation would be interested in hosting The Open Book Store on any Sunday morning -- during Advent, or other times of the year -- bookstore staff will happily appear on your doorstep, books and gifts in tow! Just provide a table (or two), and let your parishioners know in advance that The Open Book Store hand-selects gifts and books that may particularly resonate with your congregation! The Open Book Store is happy to offer this opportunity as a way to extend our ministry and connect individually with parishioners, especially with those who don't get to the Episcopal Church Center of Utah often. Please contact Janis Pierce at 801-595-5362 if you'd welcome a visit at your church!
Consecration Offertory Goes to Haiti Relief, Gifts to ERD to be matched
The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi requested that the offertory from the festive Consecration on November 6th be sent for continued work repairing the earthquake devastation in Haiti, as well as assisting one of the most impoverished areas on earth. The Episcopal Relief and Development organization and the Diocese of Haiti have been working together to rebuild eight parishes and to bring hope, health, and safety to one of the largest dioceses in the church. Preliminary figures indicate those at the Consecration service generously donated $8,000 for this important work.
For the rest of this month, all donations to Episcopal Relief and Development will be matched. Donations must reach ER&D by November 30th. A donation to ER&D is a wonderful way to remember friends and to give thanks as we start the holiday season. Bishop Hayashi and Canon Mary June Nestler sign "UTAH COMPACT".
Bishop Scott Hayashi handed the pen to Diocesan Executive Officer Canon Mary June Nestler as both offered support to the "Utah Compact." The Utah Compact states that immigration is a federal issue between the USA and other countries and not an issue between Utah and other countries. It also asks our law enforcement officers to be concerned with criminal activities and not ordered to handle civil violations of federal codes. The compact further sates that strong families are the foundation of successful communities and policies should not unnecessarily separate or break up families. The compact recognizes the role immigrants play in our workforce and we must preserve Utah's reputation as a business-friendly state. The compact ends with a affirmation of a humane approach to the reality of immigration. "The way we treat immigrants will say more about us as a free society and less about our immigrant neighbors. Utah should always be a place that welcomes people of goodwill."
The compact was signed by civic and business leaders including former governors Bangerter and Walker, former Senator Garn, Mayors of Ogden and Salt Lake City, Lane Beattie of the Salt Lake Chamber, Attorney General Shurtleff, and religious leaders including Bishops Wester and Hayashi.
Dean Lawson Retires- Mozart's Coronation Mass made into DVD
After eight-years, the Very Rev. Rick Lawson retired as the Dean of St. Mark's Cathedral. His last Sunday was November 21st. Traditionally, St. Mark's has observed Christ the King Sunday with enhanced music. To mark both the important church calendar day and Rick's retirement, the Cathedral staged Mozart's Coronation Mass.
A DVD featuring the spectacular Mozart work as performed by the 20 piece orchestra and 31 person choir will be distributed to all congregations.
PICTURE: The Very Rev. Rick Lawson greets well wishers at a farewell reception at St. Marks.
Bishop-Elect speaks out on immigration issue
The Rev. Cn. Scott B. Hayashi delivered the attached statement in a press conference called to oppose a constitutional amendment to remove the birthright citizenship clause of the 14th amendment. There are plans for the upcoming Utah legislature to join in the national campaign to start the process that would change the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment allows those born in the United States to be given citizenship.
Proposed amendments would deny citizenship to most babies American born to non-citizens. Utah Representative Rebecca Chavez-Houk, who is a member of All Saints and the Diocesan Peace and Justice Commission, was a key organizer of the press conference held at the This is the Place monument on Sept. 3, 2010 in Salt Lake City.
The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Katharine Jerfferts Schori has asked Episcopalians to join in the immigration dialogue.
